Robin Hood és un personatge entre arquetípic i legendari que apareix en balades antigues i que es comença a trobar en textos a partir del segle XVI. De vegades apareix com un comerciant i d’altres com un pagès. A finals del XVI, l’ambientació se situa a finals del segle XII, cap el 1190, quan Ricard I d’Anglaterra (Richard the Lionheart) va anar a la tercera croada. Walter Scott l’inclou com a heroi que lluita contra els senyors, amb el nom de Locksley, a la seva novel·la Ivanhoe.
